New Center for Joint Replacement is Example of TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center’s Commitment to Community

Smyrna, TN - TriStar Stonecrest Medical Center is changing the way patients and their families think about and experience joint replacement surgery since the introduction of the Center for Joint Replacement.

Over 40 patients have graduated from the Center for Joint Replacement program since its opening in October of 2016, several of whom attended the program’s first Patients and Coaches Reunion on Jan. 27, 2017.

Patients shared stories with staff and one another about how this comprehensive joint replacement program, which is based on best practices for knee and hip replacements and structured around the fundamental principles of wellness, made a difference in their care experience. “The entire program - from attending the pre-operative class, choosing a coach, having a personal care coordinator, specially trained nurses and therapists and dedicated unit - changed my perspective of having surgery,” said Catherine Winslow, hip replacement patient and reunion attendee. “You felt like you were a part of the TriStar StoneCrest family from the moment I entered the facility and it has not stopped even after leaving the hospital.”

Rob Greenberg, MD, orthopedic surgeon and medical director of the Center for Joint Replacement at TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center, explained that the patient experience through this program is much more than a typical hospital program or hospital stay.

"First and foremost we do not see our orthopedic patients as being sick," Dr. Greenberg explained. "Instead, we see our patients as healthy individuals who are coming to the hospital because they have knee or hip pain and want to live a better quality of life by having joint replacement surgery."

Wellness is at the core of the entire program. The dedicated impatient unit incorporates a unique staffing model, a< redesigned physical environment and work processes, standard protocols, and a comprehensive system to measure clinical, functional, and operational outcomes. All staff members receive specialized training and are chosen to work on the unit because of their expertise, positive attitude, and motivational skills. The Center for Joint Replacement at TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center provides an environment that maximizes patient recovery through education, a culture of early mobility, family involvement, and group interaction.

“Once you have decided that joint replacement is right for you, our team will come together to offer you the preoperative education and exercises, surgical and nursing care, and therapy and support you need to get back to your favorite activities as soon as possible. Your family members and other support persons are also an important part of your recovery team, and play a coaching role throughout your hospital stay,” Dr. Greenberg said.

“This new center is one example of TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center’s commitment to investing in our hospital and this community,” Caputo said. “Our orthopedics team is dedicated to providing patients with personalized care in a safe and comfortable setting. This new center allows us to help more people each year to gain relief from joint pain, restore normal function, and return to an active lifestyle.”
